Pep Talks
Today I had a wonderful pep talk with a stranger at a coffee shop. Well, we introduced ourselves so I guess we aren’t strangers anymore, and in this day and age we’ll probably be facebook friends in fewer then 10 mouse clicks.
Aside from that, she caught wind of my plans of going to law school and she basically had nothing good to say about it. Being a current law school student herself, she wasn’t just your average girl cracking the usual attorney jokes. Her opinions, in my opinion, at least had some merit. She basically had nothing good to say about it and told me to bail out if I still had time. I tried my best to ignore how fast she was talking and how frantically her hands were flailing around but she did get me thinking how much it would suck to hate your career. Before I forget, I also had to ignore her glittery boots but again that’s aside from the point.
She said “If you’re used to feeling smart or at the top of your class, be prepared to feel dumb.” Or “They’re gonna try to lure you in with scholarships, but you’ll probably lose them.” Luckily for me 3 years of being on the Dean’s List was through nothing but hard work and I never felt smart or entitled to being at the top of the class. In fact, I have 4 college rejection letters to prove it.
I’ve had 4 years of experience in the corporate law field and a paralegal certification and fortunately I love what I do. I love working with clients, I love helping people build on ideas, and I love being able to provide valuable advice in a complicated field. Although right now I do a lot of the grunt work, who said getting to the finish line was going to be a thrilling ride? Even the best rides get a little boring (It’s a Small Word). On top of that I truly love school and being able to constantly challenge myself intellectually would be a dream come true.
Here’s to hoping I make the right choice. If not, I’m going to give organized crime a try and that my friends is whole other story but for the curious ones please read Wise Guys or watch Goodfellas.
